BALAENO (pronounced baleno) is an innovative machine inspired by the animal world, designed for the collection of floating waste in ports and inland waters. The system is inspired by baleen, the natural filter used by some cetaceans to filter food, trapping small organisms while expelling the water.
BALAENO is the first in a series of machines for cleaning ports and inland waters from floating waste and pollutants, produced and designed by us at Progetto Blu.
BALAENO is a registered Italian patent, with extensions pending in Europe, the United States, China and Brazil.
How does BALAENO work?
Thanks to its innovative suction and collection system, the machine captures and retains all kinds of floating debris, including plastics, microplastics down to 2 mm, as well as oils and hydrocarbons present on the water surface, releasing clean water back into the surrounding environment.
Just as a whale filters water to feed, BALAENO filters water from floating waste and contaminated liquids.
BALAENO is positioned at the water surface in natural accumulation points where floating waste tends to gather due to winds and currents. Through its collection action, it captures the waste and stores it in an internal container that can later be emptied.
Characteristics
BALAENO is electric and made of AISI 316L stainless steel.
The base model, compact in size for easy placement in ports, uses a pump that processes 34,000 liters of water per hour, directing floating waste into a 160-liter collection tank that can hold up to 40 kg of waste. This is why emptying is required only infrequently.
The practical lifting system allows a single operator to easily carry out emptying and minor maintenance independently.
The base model is available in two versions for different applications: the first for floating docks, the second in a version for fixed or mobile quays.

BALAENO MG8615 for fixed dock
In the absence of a floating dock, the device can be positioned alongside a fixed dock and then moved as needed. The minimum footprint of this machine is 200 × 100 cm; the floating surface can be extended as desired to provide more comfortable access to the machine or to create an ecological island.

Custom machine design
Meeting our customers’ needs is important to us. We assess requirements based on the type of waste to be collected and the operating environment.
In addition to standard models, we design the best machine for collecting floating waste, customizing its size, power, and application to suit all needs.
The device can also be integrated with multiparametric probes for data collection.
